Chronology of Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Kingdom of Spain were established on 9 July 1992.

Embassy of Georgia in the Kingdom of Spain was opened in 2004.

Since 2021, the consulate of Georgia in Barcelona has been given the status of Consulate General.

From 2014, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Turkey extends its diplomatic presence to Georgia.

In 2015 the Government of Span appointed charge d'affaires to Georgia.

Fields of Cooperation:

Several agreements signed between Georgia and Spain support bilateral cooperation in economy, tourism, law enforcement, culture, science, education, to name a few. The two countries actively cooperate within the framework of international organizations. Spain as all EU member countries supports territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.

In 2017 Spain released Georgia’s supportive official Statement regarding the opening of the representation in Madrid by de-facto Government of Tskhinvali region, emphasizing that the region is inseparable part of Georgia which is not recognized by international community. Referring the mentioned, they do not have a legal right to open the representation.

Georgia and Spain enjoy successful cooperation in the field of police. Since 2015 Georgia has posted a police attaché to the Kingdom of Spain.

The recent high-level visits have positively contributed to the dynamics of bilateral relations and highlighted main directions of cooperation. In January 2019, after an almost 5-year gap, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia David Zalkaliani visited Madrid. The Vice Prime Minister, Foreign Minister also paid a visit to Madrid on 17-19 January 2021. On 19-21 2021, Spain was visited by Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili who participated in the opening of the International Tourism Exhibition 'FITUR 2021' where Georgia was invited under the status of a partner country

The two countries successfully cooperate in areas such as culture, education and science. Various cultural events are held every year in Spain to raise awareness of Georgia's culture, history and winemaking traditions.
